Vaccinations and Children Being Injured
Virginia Disability Group “Green the Vaccine” Event

June 3, 2008, Orlean, Virginia: Virginia disability group Mary’s Family will host a book event for Sarah Collins Honenberger, author of White Lies, a poetic and compelling story about the damage vaccinations can do to children. Nationally known attorney Clifford Shoemaker will be an honored guest. Mr. Shoemaker has recently been on the Today Show, Larry King and other media outlets; he won a lawsuit proving that a little girl’s autism had been caused by vaccinations.

This fascinating event will be at Fauquier Springs Country Club, Warrenton, Va, Sunday, June 8th 2pm-5pm. Ms. Honenberger will autograph copies of the book purchased at the event. The event is free and open to the public. Childcare will be provided.

All proceeds will directly benefit Mary’s Family, a disability advocacy group founded in 2002 that assists families who have children with special needs, disabilities, and medical challenges. Ms. Toomey, the Founding Director, serves on the Virginia Board for People with Disabilities and was a member of the Summer 2008 Autism Taskforce that reported to Virginia’s Joint Commission on Health Care.

Sarah Collins Honenberger’s prize-winning fiction has appeared in Antietam Review, New Millenium, South Lit,The HooK, and other literary journals as well as the 2007 Blue Ridge Anthology with Rita Dove, George Garrett, David Baldacci, Hilda Ward and Coy Barefoot. Her story, “The Serengeti of the Heart” was the 2005 winner of the statewide fiction contest of the Virginia Writers’ Club. In addition to a fellowship with the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts, her essay, ‘Gathering Rosebuds: A Manifesto for Working Women,’ was included in a 1998 Oprah book club segment. Ms. Honenberger, an attorney, lives and writes at the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains.

Cliff Shoemaker just won the Poling case before the Special Court of Claims. His law firm also successfully represented Ms. Toomey’s son, proving that a pertussis vaccination caused his seizure disorder and brain damage. Ironically, Ms. Toomey’s grandfather was a pediatrician and professor at Case Western who did early research on the polio vaccine.

The media narrative about vaccinations and subsequent injuries has been confusing and controversial. Find out from these 2 experts how the vaccine compensation program works, what the challenges are in proving causation and what families can do if they fear their own child has been injured by a vaccine.

Every 2nd Saturday Highland School Upper School students are bringing musical activities to respite. They received a grant from Forward Turn - a student philantrophy project partnering with the Piedmont Community Foundation. Funding was provided by the Rust Foundation. We are so pleased that 20 plus students are coming to respite every month with very neat musical activities. They are to be commended for their leadership and friendship.

FYI: This means that we have more than enough volunteers at the 2nd Saturday respite and can accommodate more children and families who need respite.

Please remember that all Mary's Family events are smoke-free, including all outdoor activities, camping and respite days.
