Awards
The Jeffrey Award is an award named after Jeffrey McCord, Martha J. Toomey's son, that is presented every year to an elected official or public figure. This person needs to show steadfast support in their arena for Mary's Family. The award winners have been:
2007 Jeffrey Award has gone to Bob Whytal, Fauquier County Director of Special Ed, for his over 30 years of dedication the children of Virginia who have special needs and learning differences. The June respite was held at Great Meadow and Doug Barne's polo ponies visited. Bob's award included a trio of Mary's Family Board members singing "You've got a Friend". There will be no music tour, thankfully!
- 2006, Governor Tim Kaine and his wife the First Lady Anne Holton, for their dedicated support of the disability community, families with children who have special needs. They will receive a hand-sewn counted cross stitch sampler too.
- 2005, Congressman Frank Wolf (R-Va) for securing a federal grant for our program. In addition, Congressman Wolf inserted language into the Amber Alert, at our request, that addresses our specific concerns if a child with special needs was kidnapped or missing. Congressman Wolf also is a co-signer, once again at our request, of a proposed National Respite Bill. He received a hand-sewn counted cross-stitch sampler.
- 2004, Harry Atherton, Fauquier Board of Supervisors, for his steadfast support of our organization as we were starting up. He received a quilt hand-sewn by the children.
The Mary's First Family Award is given to a family who has participated in all aspects of Mary's Family, has shown loyalty to other families and truly understands what we mean when we say "The greatest gift you can give is friendship." The award winners have been:
- 2007, the Balvanz family, for their energetic friendship. Thanks for the Fife and Drum Corps visit!
- 2006, Angela and Bulmaro Gutierrez, for their kindness and gentle spirits, and their strength of character.
- 2005, The Elgin family, for everything
